The Challenge
Matthew and Nina had a powerful idea to create a personalised children’s book to help explain dementia in a gentle, age-appropriate way. They had already commissioned an illustrator and written the story, but needed help pulling everything together into a finished book. The goal was to create something warm, thoughtful and well-designed, with the flexibility to personalise names and details for each reader.
My Approach
I started by reviewing the story and illustrations to understand the tone and intended audience. From there, I developed a page layout that gave each element space to breathe, ensuring the illustrations and text worked together in harmony.
Soft backgrounds, a clean type style and thoughtful pacing helped to create a gentle rhythm across the book. I handled the full layout, preparing the final files for both print and digital use, so the story could be easily shared with families everywhere.
The Outcome
The final book allowed for personalisation while maintaining a strong, cohesive design. It supported Matthew and Nina’s vision beautifully, and the project gained wide recognition, with features on BBC Scotland and Alzheimer’s Society. Their Kickstarter campaign exceeded its target and helped bring the book to more families who needed it.
It was a privilege to be involved in such a meaningful and heartfelt project.
